This isn’t really TFA post. Oh well.
For the past 4 years, I’ve coached lacrosse in East Lansing. The first two were for the 7th/8th grade team, the third was with the high school JV team, and this year I helped coach the varsity team. My experience coaching the first year was part of what helped solidify my decision that I needed to devote at least part of my career teaching.
Tonight was the end of the season banquet, my last as a coach. While I coached many kids, I had 2 kids who I coached all 4 years. It was a phenomenal experience learning and growing with them both and it’s been incredible watching them grow up over the past 4 years. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had some kids for 3 of the 4 years, some for 2, and some I only coached for a year. However, these 2 will always stick out in my mind as one of my greatest memories of my time in East Lansing. Watching them grow into young adults, struggle wth life, and being able to help them through (even if it was a smll role) some of life’s challenges. I taught them things, but more importantly, they taught me about myself.
SO, if they ever read this, I hope they know how appreciative I am of everything. I can only hope I help my students next year as much as I feel I’ve helped them.
…Philly and Newark are getting closer =)
I leave Michigan on June 28th.
